Background

What is a Planning Technician?

The "Planning Technician" has been called 'an expert arranger' who skillfully collects and analyses data and influences future land use planning decisions.  The field is wide indeed, encompassing a broad range of skills within which many areas of specialization may be pursued and increasing levels of responsibility achieved. A Planning Technician may work in any capacity from that of a Draftsperson to an Assistant Planner, depending upon his or her training, experience and initiative.

 Duties may include:

  • Graphics presentation
  • Research
  • Data collection
  • Compilation and analysis
  • Preparation of background studies
  • The writing and presentation of reports
  • Planning
  • GIS administration
  • Development control

In general, assistance in all levels of the process leading to the establishment of policy, including its eventual administration.

Objective


A basic objective of the Association is to establish and promote principles and standards of conduct and competence in the field.

Ways in which it is best met are constantly under review and include:

  • The exchange of ideas and information between those working in various aspects of the field throughout the Atlantic Provinces.
  • Reviewing compilations of course elements to keep abreast of current employer needs.
  • The establishment of educational programs designed to meet changing needs in Planning Offices.
  • The publication of an annual newsletter.

Training


It is a goal of the Association to provide its members with a comprehensive, on-going educational program. Efforts are made to offer seminars in convenient locations and to keep costs to a minimum.
